Do you need a special outlet for an infrared sauna?
The question worth answering before you order, not after the pallet is in the driveway. Standard outlet, dedicated circuit, and how to tell which one you need.
This is the question that turns a good first week into a bad one, and it is almost always asked too late. Answer it before you order.
The short version
Smaller home infrared saunas commonly run from a standard 120 V household outlet. Larger ones draw more and frequently want a dedicated circuit, and some want 240 V. Which category yours falls into depends on the specific model, not on infrared saunas as a category, so the only answer that helps you is the one on its spec sheet.
Both Nutelix sizes are specified at a 220-240V supply. In North America that means a dedicated circuit an electrician installs, the same as an electric oven, rather than the standard 120 V outlet already in the room. For the amperage and the plug type on the size you are considering, ask us before you order and we will put it in writing.
What a dedicated circuit means, and why it comes up
A dedicated circuit is one that runs from your panel to a single outlet and serves nothing else. It matters because a sauna is a sustained, high-draw load: unlike a kettle, it pulls hard for a long stretch. Share that circuit with a freezer, a treadmill and a window unit and the breaker will eventually make the decision for you, usually mid-session.
Even where a sauna is rated to run from a standard outlet, plenty of electricians will recommend giving it its own circuit anyway. That is not upselling. It is the difference between a device that works and a device that works every time.
How to check what you actually have
- Find the breaker that controls the outlet you intend to use, and note its amperage.
- Find out what else is on it. Switch it off and walk the room. Whatever else goes dark shares your circuit.
- Compare against the rated draw. A continuous load should not sit at the top of a circuit's rating. This is exactly the calculation an electrician does in thirty seconds, so if there is any doubt, get one to look.
- Check for a GFCI requirement. Requirements vary by location, and a garage or basement outlet may already be GFCI-protected. Local code governs, not a manufacturer's brochure.
Three mistakes worth avoiding
Extension cords
Do not run a sauna on one. A sustained high-draw load on a domestic extension lead is a genuine fire risk, and it will void the warranty on anything sold by anyone. If the outlet is in the wrong place, move the sauna or add an outlet.
Assuming the garage outlet is fine
Garage circuits are often shared with a lot of other things and are often the oldest wiring in the house. Check rather than assume.
Leaving it until it arrives
If your sauna needs a dedicated circuit and you find out on delivery day, you now have an assembled sauna you cannot switch on, and an electrician's first available appointment. Fifteen minutes of checking beforehand removes the entire problem.
The one thing to do today
Find the spec sheet for the sauna you are considering, from any brand, and locate the voltage, the amperage and whether a dedicated circuit is required. If you cannot find those three numbers on the listing, ask. A seller who will not put them in writing before you buy is telling you something.
