How long an infrared sauna actually takes to heat up
Twenty minutes is the number everyone advertises. Here is what governs the real one in your house, and why the answer changes in a garage in January.
It is the first question almost everyone asks, and it is the one the industry answers least honestly. A heat-up time is not a property of a sauna. It is a property of a sauna, a room, a season and a target temperature, and changing any of those four changes the answer.
What the advertised number usually means
When a manufacturer publishes a heat-up time, it is almost always measured under conditions that flatter it: a sauna that has been run before, sitting in a heated indoor room at around 70°F, heating to a modest target rather than a maximum one. That is not dishonest on its own. It becomes misleading when nobody says which conditions were used, because the buyer assumes their own garage in February is close enough.
So ask any seller, including us, for the three conditions behind their figure: the temperature of the room it started in, the temperature it was heating to, and which size it was measured on. A heat-up time quoted without those three is not a measurement, it is a piece of packaging.
The four things that actually move the number
1. The temperature you are heating from
This is the largest single factor and the one people forget. A sauna in a 70°F spare room starts most of the way to a comfortable session. The same sauna in a 30°F garage has to heat the wood, the glass, the bench and the air from far further back, and the wood is the slow part. Expect a meaningful difference, not a rounding error.
2. The temperature you are heating to
Infrared saunas are not linear. Getting to a moderate temperature is quick; the last stretch toward maximum is slow, because the sauna is losing heat faster the hotter it gets. Most owners settle at a temperature well below the maximum and never see the slow part at all. If you plan to run at the top of the range, budget for it.
3. Whether it is cold or warm to start with
A sauna used yesterday evening heats faster this evening. The wood retains heat for hours. This is why the second week with a sauna feels quicker than the first: nothing changed except that you started using it regularly.
4. The door
A full glass front is the single nicest thing about a modern infrared sauna and it is also a thermal weak point compared to solid wood. It is a trade most people make happily, because a glass door is what stops a small space feeling like a box. It does mean the published figure for a glass-fronted sauna is not comparable to one for a solid-panel one.
Why infrared does not need the same temperature as a traditional sauna
A traditional Finnish sauna works by heating the air to a high temperature and letting the air heat you. An infrared sauna emits infrared energy that warms you more directly, so people generally report reaching the same sense of a session at a noticeably lower air temperature. That is why comparing a 150°F infrared sauna to a 195°F traditional room by temperature alone tells you very little.
The practical consequence is the one that matters here: because the target temperature is lower, the heat-up time is shorter than a traditional room of the same size, and the electricity used per session is lower too.
How to make yours heat faster
- Put it somewhere heated. A spare room, a basement with heating, or a finished garage will beat an unheated one every time. This is the highest-leverage decision you will make.
- Use the timer. Almost every modern sauna can be started before you walk into the room. Starting it from the kitchen turns a twenty-five minute wait into no wait at all.
- Keep the door shut while it heats. Obvious, routinely ignored.
- Do not chase the maximum. Find the temperature you actually enjoy and set that as the target. Most owners end up lower than they expected.
The honest summary
In a normally heated indoor room, a home infrared sauna is a set-it-and-come-back appliance rather than a wait-around one. In an unheated space in winter, it is a start-it-before-dinner appliance. Both are fine. Knowing which one you are buying before the pallet arrives is the whole point.
