Near, mid and far infrared: what the three bands actually do

Full spectrum is on every listing and explained on almost none of them. Here is the physics, the honest state of the evidence, and what to ask a seller.

Infrared is not one thing. It is a stretch of the electromagnetic spectrum sitting just past visible red light, and it is conventionally divided into three bands by wavelength. Different bands behave differently when they meet a person, which is the entire reason full-spectrum saunas exist.

What follows is the physics, which is settled, kept carefully apart from the health claims, which are not.

The three bands

Near infrared

The shortest wavelengths, closest to visible light. Near infrared penetrates least deeply into tissue and is the band most associated in research with surface-level effects. It is usually delivered by a dedicated emitter rather than by the main panels, so its presence is a real hardware difference rather than a labelling one.

Mid infrared

The middle of the range. Sits between the other two in penetration depth. In practice this is the band most often quietly missing from saunas that still describe themselves as full spectrum.

Far infrared

The longest wavelengths, and the workhorse of essentially every infrared sauna on the market. Far infrared is what is doing the heating in anything advertised simply as infrared, and it is the band most efficiently absorbed by the body as heat. If a sauna has only one type of emitter, this is it.

So what does full spectrum mean

It should mean all three bands are emitted, using emitters actually capable of producing each one. It is not a regulated term, and that is the problem: a listing can say full spectrum while the hardware is a set of far infrared panels and one small near infrared lamp.

Three questions to ask any seller, including us:

  • Which emitters produce which band, by name and position?
  • What wavelength range does each emitter actually cover?
  • Can the bands be run independently, or is full spectrum a single mode?

A seller who cannot answer these is describing a sticker, not a specification.

The part where we do not overreach

There is a body of research on heat exposure and on infrared specifically, and there are studies people cite enthusiastically in this industry. There is also a great deal of marketing that treats a small study as a settled outcome, and a great deal that describes a sauna as if it were a medical device, which it is not.

So, plainly: a home sauna is a wellness product. It is not a treatment for any medical condition, it does not diagnose or cure anything, and nobody selling one, including us, should tell you otherwise. If you have a heart condition, are pregnant, are on medication that affects heat regulation, or have any condition you are unsure about, ask your doctor before starting. That is not a legal formality, it is the actual right advice.

What people consistently report, and what is reasonable to say, is that they find sessions relaxing, that they find the heat pleasant on tired muscles, and that a warm session in the evening fits well into winding down. Those are experiences, offered as experiences.

Does the extra band matter to you

Honestly: if what you want is a warm room to sit in a few evenings a week, a far infrared sauna does that, and it costs less. Full spectrum is worth paying for if you specifically want near and mid emitters and you have satisfied yourself that the hardware genuinely has them.

Anyone who tells you the choice is obvious is selling you the one they stock.
